I have never enjoyed Hallowe'en and I rate it as the worst day of the year for me outside of February. One year, when I was 10-ish (would have been somewhere between 8 and 11) my mother went out so her friend babysat us and she had the idea of taking us trick-or-treating, and I still feel miserable about it sometimes! I hated the idea of wearing a rubbish bag over my head to simulate witches and the like! And to make it worse, the last few years before I left home I was almost invariably on my own come Hallowe'en, so I used to turn the lights off and play on my Nintendo DS or similar.

Apparently my 5-year-old niece went tonight (her first), and enjoyed it. I guess at that age it can be understood, but I still fail to see the point. I haven't asked her directly what she did and whether she liked it though.

Oh, and don't get me started on student idiots. Coming back from Leeds, I had the misfortunre of being on the last bus arriving at Uni tonight before 2200 - and it was packed with people wearing silly costumes and the like. And the driver seemed to want to get in on the act by turning us all into ghosts by swerving a bendy bus over a speed hump at 35mph on more than one occasion! <(

At least I don't have to worry about trick or treating if I'm in the middle of nowhere :p

I hate Halloween with a passion. You get kids terrorising the neighbourhood by kicking the footballs at walls where there's no ball games allowed signs on the estate all year round. Then Halloween they come banging on the door down demanding money and or sweets. I just don't bother answering the door, I normally go out or I'm away but I'm skint because I've just bought the Mrs a new laptop.

We seem to copy most things from the US, we'll doing thanksgiving and Independents day next.

We almost made it to 6.45pm before the message came over the radio about 'little darlings' throwing eggs at buses.

I was referring to the sprits of the dead being around on that night, when I referred to the "Dark Side". I believe that in Mexico, there is a similar festival that commemorates the Night of the Dead at this time.

That would be the rather impressive Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival, which is usually celebrated on November the 1st & 2nd, and having studied the Day of the Dead festival for an Art & Design project way back in School, it's quite an interesting & colourful festival - indeed, the Mexicans will even produce things such as Clay (&other methods) Skulls with things that the person or persons that it is in memorial for liked / possessed etc... If i can find mine i'll try and phot it tomorrow(although rather obviously im not deceased! - I hope!). :)

Here's the wiki page about it.

As for Halloween. Personally, i'm not that bothered by it anymore just as long as A, It dosent affect me / try to stay clear of it, and B, No crime is committed / involved.

Earlier i had two kids saying the whole 'trick or treat' thing to me on my bike*. Just thought to my self, yeah...The trick is that im not letting you anywhere near my treats ive just brought from M&S, the treat. Im not going to a report you to those officers over there, and im not giving you anything either / close to telling you to bu**er off. Some kids can be alright - we had a few visiting earlier and had no problems whatsoever, but it's the ones who do go in for this 'Dont give me anything and i'll get you back attitude' i cant stand. Indeed Thames Valley stepped up patrols across their region this evening after some of the 'delightfull' tricks placed on peoples houses last year, including some idiot who thought it would 'only wake the residents of the house up and spook them'...by posting a firework through their letterbox. Which of course didnt work, set the house on fire, said person was arrested, convicted and now features in one of Thames Valley Police's add campaigns.

(To be fair too, i wasnt being forceably miserable - it's been raining fairly heavily in Basingstoke for most of the evening and i was getting pretty drenched!)

If ever we needed evidence that Hallowe'en and its silly trick-or-treat nonsense is not a good thing for society, here it is! <(

Disgraceful. And that is kind.
