Recent decorating work around the station has resulted in TurnStyles appearing infront of the toilets next to Platform 1.

Are they now going to charge usage?

I thought only major stations did this, and only because the toilets were run by attendants for which entry and subsequent condition (due to attention by the Attendants) justified the supliment.

I can't think of any station toilets which justify the 30p charge. New Street's being particularly rank. :-x

Euston's were quite nice last time I used them - almost worth the 30p!

Clearly never been to Edinburgh or Glasgow Central. Both toilets have apparently won "Loo of the Year" awards.

30p isn't very customer friendly either - a single 20p coin feels much easier to use. I normally hop on a train and use the toilet there and save some money.

I tend to end up paying the money at the station because:
- the facilities are much more pleasant
- the toilets don't smell (train toilets always smell in my experience)
- you can't guarantee there'll be a working train toilet anywhere near you: an annoying proportion seem locked out of use when I travel

Out of curiosity, which train toilets do you have trouble with? Voyager toilets always smell far worse from outside than inside!

standing in the vestibules of a voyager is unbearable. that stench is horrific!!

There is no legal obligation for NR to offer toilets at their stations, and if they do, they have a right to charge for them. The 30p that users pay for the toilet doesn't necessarily cover the cost of running them.

I think Network Rail charge for all of their toilets, with the exception of St Pancras (but they don't entirely own this do they?) where they're free.

St Pancras is owned by London & Continetal Railways, and I think NR manage the TOC areas of the station (i.e. not the retail or Eurostar areas).

Turnstiles also recently appeared at Southsea, although at least they benefitted from a £30K makeover earlier this year.

Looks like a new SWT revenue stream!

I think the toilets at Guildford have been renovated as well. They have certainly been well advertised as undergoing work previously.

...Although if my memory of Guildford Main is correct, there is a drivers/guards restroom on either platform 6 or 8 - In the building opposite the subway.

Why should they charge anything to use toilets, no wonder people go in the streets.

My thoughts exactly...Especially as the last time I used the facilities at Guildford station, it should've been more like users get PAID 30p for each visit - I've seen less dirt and muck in the open sileage tanks on Greyhound buses! hock::x

The other major point of course is that use of the loo - Despite being a core human necessity - Is against the law in all public places, even if the offender chooses as appropriate and suitable a spot as possible in which to do their business...And charging people to comply with the law is a form of extortion, I feel.
Just out of curiosity though: Compared with such a breach of public decency as suggested above, how illegal would be the act of vaulting the turnstiles to avoid paying the charge?

First off, hi guys, newbie here.

Secondl sorry if i am digging up an old topic, thought i'd put my 20p worth in

as far as i am aware form a "friend" who apprently knows everything about Trains ETC, said it was a Franchise commitment to charge users at guildford station to use the facilities?

And i think they may be doing so at small manned stations such as mine (Godalming) as the toilet is now locked and you have to ask a member of the dispatch team to unlock it, so i would at a guess think its at all stations?.

From a friend who talks to a gaurd, I heard there could be an incentive to charge to use the toilets on the trains? (how true ths is i don't know) it was proberbly a joke aimned at the freind who knows alot about trains.

I've just found this forum and this thread and I think I ought to put one or two things straight.

1/ LucaZone is correct the toilets have been renovated, they've been so for quiet sometime, they've been kept locked due to vandalism.

2/ The barriers have been installed to help reduce the amount of vandalism that keeps going on in there, such as graffiti & etching.

3/ There is NOT a drivers/guards restroom on either platform 6 or 8 - In the building opposite the subway. I should know I'm based at Guildford.

There's a small café in the Waiting Room on 5/6 and there are two offices on 7/8, not messrooms. It should be noted that there's security glass on the end of them & the number of muppets who don't realise that they're being watched having a pee, a cigarette or joint is quiet astonishing.

You are also on a discrete CCTV camera too that's linked not only to the station announcers office, but this is also linked to the BTP office..

So you've been warned.
