Greyhound's Demise?

The greyhound service is to be operated by normal buses but fitted with leather coach seats. .

I'm not surprised as I believe the Greyhound coaches had done a fair mileage with National Express (london-leeds)before First bought them so they will have been needing replacement or major refurbishment fairly soon whatever happened

It appears that there are further tinkering to the old Greyhound service, now the X10, from 6 December with less services and Cymru Clipper tickets not being mentioned as valid and concession holders now having to pay.

lol....oh well the 701 will still be free for concessionary pass holders... so more custom for the 701... another failed attempt by First to run a small independant off the road...after all that was the only reason why First started accepting passes on the Greyhound... to try and starve the 701 of custom... just like it's pathetic X12 effort

I'm assuming that they'll be repainting the current Greyhound fleet (and maybe an internal refurb)...

the publicity for the X10 shows a Scania/Irizar in the same blue livery as the private hire fleet

also, all the greyhound vehicles have had their vinyls removed (ready for repainting?)

A well maintained 10 year old Irizar PB is a far superior coach to a new Plaxton of any kind.

The well maintained aspect being the banana skin for these being owned by First.

There's not many Stagecoach coaches on "local" work now except in Scotland and the X5 Varsity service.

The Lakes X5 has now lost its coaches in favour of e300/e400 IIRC. Much different from the mid 90s Stagecoach Express routes like Plymouth to Exeter

It makes far more sense though to use a bus. They're accessible to all, unlike coaches, cheaper to acquire and far more easily redeployed later on, and more economical to operate. Not to mention the higher seating capacity of a 'decker over a single deck coach. Makes sense.

Not to Trent Barton, who just introduced 9 tri-axles Plaxton Elites on the red arrow (replacing older coaches), which is pretty a much a standard limited stop buses route with a 35 minute journey time running every 10 minutes

A recent review of said vehicles did, however, make mention of TB's policy of not operating double deckers (though neglected to offer any reason), pointing out that the seating capacity of the coaches simply isn't available with a single decker bus.

The 'Really Good Bus Company' have stated in the past that they use single deckers 'because the passengers prefer them'. It seems that all those passengers that *don't* prefer them, and would rather have a double-decker', are best ignored.
