doing Grantham-Heaton Chapel (and then on to Stockport) in December. Using Advances i can get £15.50 Grantham-Leeds and then £11.20 Leeds-Stockport OPR which IIRC allows break of journey, Heaton Chapel's ungated anyway so it doesn't matter.

However, in the interests of flexibility the OPDR at £30.30 doesn't look too bad-but is that via leeds, or must one take the replacement bus from Sheffield?

It looks like you have a railcard from the prices you quote.

Leeds-Stockport Off Peak Day return (CDR) is £11.20. The Off Peak return (SVR) is £13.05, however you are better off with a ticket to Chinley (£11.60 for the SOR) if you are returning another day or travelling at peak time, and cutting 'short' at Heaton Chapel.

The £30.30 ticket you quote is an Off Peak return (SVR), valid after 0900. I am pretty sure it is valid via Leeds but you'd need to check the Routeing Guide to be certain.

Why bother with all those tickets when a Nottingham to Stockport CDR is only £15-20 giving a total of £19-80.
It is valid via Stoke or Sheffield

The Poster specifically stated that he wanted to travel via Leeds on at least the outward journey
so I was just giving him a slightly cheaper option
if he was interested in returning via leeds

I don't see a problem there ....

East Coast to Leeds, TPE to Man Picc, then the local to Heaton Chapel.

I've also had a quick look on the NXEC East Coast website, and they quote fares and timings for that route as well.

Edit. Seems Selby is a valid route as well, if your after getting route milage, as the East Coast site will allow you to reserve seats on Hull Trains service to Selby, then a TPE service to Manchester from there.
