Would you really need two diesel modules? I would presume the battery would take most of the strain for the limited amount of running off the wires.
It could just as well be two batteries and one diesel module, I guess. The train has to have at least one diesel module, or it wouldn't be a tri-mode.

In the trial, 802207 had a single battery module with the same 700kW power output as the 802's diesel engine, so it would have the same performance as a standard 802 off the wires. Using the battery reportedly reduced diesel consumption by 35-50%.

I'd expect GC will want the same.

Do we know where these units will be based? Presume Bounds Green with servicing at Heaton and somewhere in Yorkshire?
Bounds Green is pretty full with LNER and other operators using it.
These TOCs often struggle to get extra units into depot or Ferme Park.

Looking at the routes they operate and the modelling done as part of the trail results would suggest 2 battery packs per train

I'd expect them to a greater capacity than the 555KWH on the test unit possibly upto 14% greater given improvements to battery tech since the test unit was developed.

It really depends on the route, how far off the wires, one diesel might be enough if route is flat enough, because batteries can be used as a boost to accelerate.

Just because a prototype unit had a 700kw battery, doesn't necessarily imply the same output will be in Grand Central fleets.

The original press release definitely specified that they’d be in battery mode in and around stations which suggests 2 diesel/1 battery pack. While it is probably the case for these units, we are all assuming it’s an either/or situation-I don’t necessarily believe this has to be the case in the long term, depending on how efficiently these ‘Gen2’ packs can be packaged.

Birmingham to Didcot, and Reading to Brighton is a long way on two batteries!

I thought the batteries were intended for approaching stations, for during station calls and then for departing stations, at any other time (away from OHL) they would operate on diesel.

If they are fortunate enough to get that OA approved, they would configure any new order appropriately. It would be crazy to specify units which will be fully utilised on their existing routes suboptimally for those routes purely on the off chance that they get the chance to run a service down to the south coast.

They have only ordered 9 new Hitachi units which will be for Sunderland and Bradford services.

If, and a big if, they get granted the Brighton service, I’ve read somewhere it would be the class 180s operating it.

To some extent, if the trains have modular power packs, the different units can be designed to hang on the same brackets and be swappable.

They have a 5car train with 4 units: transformer; diesel; battery pack; and second diesel or battery. So does that leave space under 5th car. There are already inverters to convert dc from the battery for traction.

Not very difficult to add some third rail pick up shoes, and use the 750v dc supply in South of England. A bit of power electronics, through the inverters and got dual voltage. Even easier if the batteries run at approx 750v as don't need to convert the voltage. Admittedly might need higher amp rated inverters, but that is small marginal cost.

The solution exists, not just GC, for instance GWR run services to Gatwick, Weymouth, Portsmouth (all third rail electrified) so are unlikely to want BEMUs that cannot use third rail. If you have the dc batteries and inverters already fitted, then allowing third rail add on is relatively cheap.

Exactly! Hence the mention of the Brighton services was a complete red herring.

The stock has been ordered for their current routes, not the highly speculative open access applications.
It’s not a speculative application if the application has actually been made… I think the word you’re looking for is ambitious.

Putting aside the shock (no pun intended) that the user who praises battery potential the most has said something pessimistic about them, is Northallerton to Sunderland and back on pure-battery power enough range? I'm almost certain the OHLE at Sunderland is useless given it's not just a different voltage, but a different current type as well.

I was thinking more about the Crofton based unit diagrams.
As an example 5A70 comes off Crofton depot at 0544 and runs the 30 miles up hill to Bradford arrifing 0647. 1A70 leaves Bradford at 0757 and arrives Doncaster 52 miles later at 0933, where the pan can be raised to go up the ECML to Kings Cross. Not sure how much of the Transpennine 25kV could be utilised when it has been commissioned presumably after Bradley Wood Jn, but how far ? Guessing there are no plans to electrify Pontrfract - Shaftholme.

Similarly, at the moment Grand Central units are serviced in Tyne Yard so could theoretically depart under the OLE but would need ro drop their pan after just three miles to nwgotuate the unelectrified line via Pelaw to Sunderland. It is then 47 miles at over an hour until the train could get under the 25kV, and where could the GC trains then pan up ? Presumably during the Northallerton station call ?

Absolutely, I mean there's no particular reason, other than adding more complication and cost, you couldn't have a dual-voltage unit capable of running on 25kV AC and 1.5kV DC (I believe such units exist on the Continent?) but it hardly seems worthwhile for Grand Central seeing as they'll only get an extremely limited benefit from such a thing.

absolutely - many trains in the Netherlands and in France are capable of that.

e.g., in the Netherlands, all ICNG are fitted out for both 25kV AC and 1.5kV DC, and some are fitted out for 15kV AC or 3kV DC as well (though never both)

The benefit of the diesel/battery combination is that the diesel only has to generate the average power used off the wires, which be much less than the peak power need.

That said, I'd still expect GC to have opted for one battery module and two diesels. That combination gives the greatest redundancy.

That would probably depend how the battery modules are configured. I noticed from Green Signals interview with Bob Tiller re the class 99s, he said that the class 93s could only recharge theier batteries from the OLE - a reason why GBRf rejected the notion of batteries on the class 99s.
Maybe the battery AT300s are able to recharge using the diesels.

Interesting, I'll have to listen to that Green Signals interview (it's on the list). I'm surprised a modern battery vehicle isn't configured for at least regenerative charging under braking. Hopefully the new Hitachi ones are, although for a high-speed train on the ECML there shouldn't be too many options for brake-charging.
