LOL,No..The example I gave was when I used to work for Regional Railways,I always had 1 punter who would always give a £10/£20 note for the fare he wanted on the 1st train to where he was going,a couple of times I would say "sorry mate,cant change that" which invariably meant a freebie for said punter.It was only after consultation with colleagues that I found this was his regular trick,hence the next time his change was made up of sh'te !!!!!!!

anything over 20p in 1p & 2p is not legal tender! I have seen a list somewhere (may even be in our company handbooks, but that is downstairs!) that tells you how much of each coin you can accept.

I've heard a report from someone at York that "there is a hole in the rear left corner of the power car (43068)" can anyone confirm or explain this?

BTW yesterday's 1342 SUN-KGX departed 71 late but arrived only 40 late! Not bad. The return run did not appear on LDB for some reason. It's all been on time so far today.

Hmm,I personally dont have a preference,its all "money" at the end of the day,the only thing I object to is if a regular traveller tries to be clever and gives you a £20 note for a £2 fare every day,to get round this I tend to give the change in "Sh'te,i.e 5ps.10ps etc..they soon find the correct fare the next day !!!

Fair enough. I usually prefer cash if I'm on a till, until I get close to being chronically short of change in it then any card transaction is welcome!

The theft of cable is getting serious.

Heres a press release from yesterday, 2nd Jan, about 2 men sentenced to 2 months in prison, convicted of stealing NR cable in Rotherham: http://www.btp.presscentre.com/content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=1000&NewsAreaID=2

I've just re-read the NR Press statement from Sept 07 when they announced ££ rewards for info leading to prosecution for cable theft. It targets WF (Wakefield) & TS (Teesside) postcodes!

"In 2006/07 cable theft directly caused more than 145 000 minutes of delay to trains in the North East area. The estimated cost to Network Rail of that crime was approximately £10 million - money which will have to be diverted from maintaining and improving the railway elsewhere.

From 1 April to 18 Aug 2007 there have been 269 incidents on the London North Eastern route. That has resulted in 68,500 minutess delay.

In the Wakefield area there have been 39 incidents in the same period - causing 24, 647 delay minutes.

In the Tees Valley area there have been 69 incidents in the same period - causing 11, 069 minutes delay.

The British Transport Police have recorded 1158 offences of cable theft since April 2006 in the North East area and have arrested more than 470 people.

The reward is up to £1,000 for information which leads to the arrest AND conviction of a person or persons for the theft of copper cable from the rail network. This reward is only available for crimes committed within the WF/TS postcode and is offered up to 28 February 2008. "

Should spend nights-off cable-watching! And they'll leave footprints in the snow!

Well you learn something new every day.

...coins of cupro-nickel, silver or bronze shall be legal tender as follows—
(a)
coins of cupro-nickel or silver of denominations of more than 10 pence, for payment of any amount not exceeding £10;
(b)
coins of cupro-nickel or silver of denominations of not more than 10 pence, for payment of any amount not exceeding £5;
(c)
coins of bronze, for payment of any amount not exceeding 20 pence.

However, saying that, it is important to understand what legal tender actually means. It is a method of payment which cannot be refused in settlement of a debt. So there is nothing stopping two parties agreeing to accept more than is required by law.
