Hello!

I have a strange question. I need to travel from Glasgow back to Milton Keynes Central on Monday. I have no time restriction as i am off work.

The strange point being I have a ticket form York to MKC (Not London) I need to connect into that one.

Now i know i should go to York and pick up the journey form there but.............. is it cheaper to get a single from GLC to an interchange station covered by the single ticket mentioned above. I would appreciate your advice ( i think what i am asking is what is cheaper a single GLC to York, Crewe, BHM or machester Piccadilly or somewhere else!)

I think the cheapest walk-on ticket is the £38.10 Anytime Single Glasgow - Leeds route Appleby.

Yes, you can buy it any time.

If you're going back to Glasgow within a month, you may wish to know that the Anytime Return Glasgow - Leeds route Appleby costs £47.60.

It is worth noting that the Carlisle to Leeds trains are not very Frequent .

is there some reason you can't just get an over-distance excess for the ticket you have? It would be cheaper and more flexible.

Ask for an over-distance excess, you can then take any permitted route between Glasgow and Birmingham with no requirement to go via York.

As you did not supply info about the ticket already held, it is difficult to comment further, however I have sent you a PM.

No idea why you have but BEFORE in capitals, this ticket is available on board the train. The only reason why it may not be is if access to the train is denied by the presence of a barrier. In my experience the only trains at Glasgow Central where a manual barrier is in place forcing you to buy before boarding are First Scotrail Trains. In contrast, Virgin, TPE and CrossCountry (and EC - though not applicable on this particular ticket) will sell you this Anytime Single on board.

Virgin quite often have a manual barrier in place at platforms 1/2 at least and, last Thursday, this was manned by the actual train manager of my train rather than station staff (not sure if this is always the case). So he checked his own passengers' tickets before they boarded!

The excess should be £0.00 in this case.

Ticket held:
York - Milton Keynes Central
Rte: Not London
Ticket type: SOS
Price: £102.50

Ticket required (appropriate fare):
Glasgow Cen/Qst - Milton Keynes Central
Rte: Not London
Ticket type: SVS
Price: £102.00

Difference is -50p, but you won't get the 50p back. So the excess is £0.00.

My advice with walk-on fares is to buy them on the day to avoid these sort of problems; there is no benefit to buying them in advance. But perhaps they are company tickets bought on expenses and have to be done this way.

Note that the excess above is to the "appropriate" fare, however if he boarded a train where ticket issuing facilities were available and asked for the excess on board, then it would be to the "full" fare, which is £130.00, the excess would then cost £27.50.

(Change of route excess and change of ticket type excess, when travelling off route or when travelling at a restricted time on a restricted ticket respectively, are priced as the difference between the fare paid and the "appropriate" fare, even when buying on board when ticket issuing facilities were available. However this is NOT the case with over-distance and you can only excess to the "appropriate" fare from a ticket office or where facilities were not available, if ticket office facilities were available then it is to the "full" fare. If the ticket office refuses to issue the excess or lacks the required knowledge then I would argue that the excess to the appropriate fare could be made on board on the basis that you were denied the opportunity to excess before boarding. If the ticket office refuses to issue the appropriate excess, and the guard attempts a full fare excess my advice would be to obtain an unpaid fare notice, and then appeal it. We can provide advice on how to word the letter, although I cannot guarantee success.
