. . .There is mentioned, in one of the Rail Accident Archive Accident Reports, a report of a collision between two trains on the pre–modernised Glasgow Subway at Merkland St., that the station had a three aspect (green over yellow over red) on the station end wall in the direction of travel – what signalling was used pre–modernisation, and did the Glasgow Subway retain wayside signals after the 1977 modernisation?

. . .(I presume there will be no trackside signals of any sort needed when the new automatic stock finally comes into operation!)

im guessing there might be some sort of signals left, because what if ATO fails and trains need to be driven manually (if thatll ever happen that is)

Glasgow retained red/green signals after the 1980 modernisation with the trains operating automatically.

(On an official visit around 1982, I was lucky enough to drive a G2 train in Protected Manual for a few stations)

There are a few videos of the signals on the Samuel Thomas McCann Youtube channel, however I would advise muting the audio as he seems to not particularly understand much of what they are (seeing as his primary motivation appears to be his enthusiasm for traffic lights).

The original (post the 1935 electrification - semaphores were used in cable days) was automatic two aspect (RG) colour light signals operated using the T-irons which supplied the coach lighting supply. There were three three aspect (RYG) signals in the area of the car sheds pits at Broomloan Road (where trains were craned out of the tunnels, there being no points whatsover on the system).

Post the 1970s modernisation the signals were still mostly RG but, although still automatic, were operated differently. A good description is given in "Circles under the Clyde", published in 1997 by Capital Transport. ISBN 1 86414 190 2. Highly recommended as a history of the system up until then
