Hi everyone, does anyone know if they are planning on, whether soon or far into the future, nationalising the rail freight sector?

It makes sense but I suppose with DB being a Dutch company and Freightliner being split now, half being Heavy Haul Rail owned by a French company if I’m correct.

The passenger TOCs were free, it was just a matter of not re-letting the franchises as they expired. Not so freight companies. That would need cash. Which we lack.

I am not so sure there is any advantage of nationalising what are essentially B2B businesses anyway. If lack of competition became a problem then I suppose the government could setup a new freight company to compete.

No, there are no plans.

However, DRS is a public company (because it hauls the nuclear traffic) but there are no plans for it to take over other companies. It would need funds to do so.

It’s not happening, I don’t believe it’s ever been suggested, probably because it doesn’t make sense.

I have always wondered why DRS wasn't coming under GBR. I know DRS is technically under DESNZ (Dept for Energy Security and Net Zero) but I imagine it could even just be a branding exercise - GBR DRS? I suppose there's no real reason for that, though, other than 'wouldn't it be nice'.

You're not correct...

DB is German ownership. HHR is owned by Brookfield (Canadian) and GIC (Singaporean). Freightliner is owned CMA CGM (French). To complete the main players, GBRf is owned by Infracapital (British).
