There are a number of different ways passengers can get a ticket.
E-tickets, M-tickets, paper tickets, Smartcards and not forgetting contactless. (Have I missed any?)
However, I was wondering if the railways (and public transport generally) would prefer just one way. And, if so, which one?
Any thoughts?

Not really, as they do different things. Universal e-tickets (and paper roll tickets with barcodes) with an overlay of Contactless for short journeys seems the direction things are going in, with smartcards for season tickets.

The convenience of Contactless PAYG for short journeys trumps the attractiveness of an all e-ticket approach. Likewise e-tickets need a barcode enabled paper alternative that can be bought from machines and ticket offices.
