It depends for how long. Standing from the last couple of stops into London/BHM for 20 minutes maybe. Standing for longer and/or on an intercity journey, no, especially given UK fare prices.

The Avanti shambles is (or should be) a temporary situation though, and not necessarily representative of "normal" loads
