Indeed - it's all very well using a healthy dollop of post-Covid hindsight, but SWR ordered the 701s for a railway that was continuing to grow and used a mixed fleet of 455s, 456s, 458s and 707s. Ordering a standard fleet to replace all of these and provide room for further growth was exactly what was required at the time they were ordered.

SWR are among the TOCs hit hardest by the post-Covid slump in commuting.

I really don’t understand why Alstom haven’t had partial termination notices for the 701s and 720s. The delivery delays are significant enough that that ought to be a reasonable penalty.

Rock Rail South Western had recieved compensation for the late 701 delivery.

I'd love them on Chat Moss instead of yet more 323s. Sod the micro fleet argument but they are much better suited to the Airport run than a 323.

Yes, I know. But at this point in time, part cancellation would probably be a better outcome given the surplus of stock.

Pity we don't have more electrification. Especially local lines around Bristol etc . Even if they wired Filton bank Bristol tm then to Southampton give them a refurbished interior with 2+2 seating plus more tables and put them.on Cardiff to Portsmouth services
