But if it's a new platform of train (for level boarding) does that really play into things regardless of brand?

Latest generations of multiple unit (i.e. anything designed in the 2010s) are quite different to their predecessors in various aspects. And looking forward, the proposed low floor trains for Northern, Southeastern, Chiltern/GWR and ScotRail will be different from their immediate forebearers.
