French & German rail maps

Hi, does anyone know where I might be able to find comprehensive maps of the French and German rail networks, similar to those on the National Rail website? Cheers.

As Germany has such a massive network, to find a free map that details all of it online won't be easy!

That's the Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) map - a few of the different regions of Germany have similar maps, but not all of them as far as I can tell! I don't believe there is a German equivalent of the National Rail map, but I'd be interested to see it if there was!

I certainly can't find one online, apart from regional maps like the one above or urban networks like the Berlin BVG map.

This one purports to show the trunk routes.

If you don't mind spending some money then the most comprehensive map available of the German network is probably Schweers & Wall's Eisenbahnatlas Deutschland ; other countries available as well but not France (yet). I also believe it is now available as a download for i-Pad / Phone via the i-tunes store if preferred (the book is rather heavy!)

Heavy is right for that atlas, but it's very detailed. Struggling to understand the many different colours and thicknesses of the lines still!

There's a map of German local and regional railways, published by the Association of Local Rail Transport Executives. It does not include high speed lines but may still be helpful, as lines are coloured differently by TOC.

those "Network Rail of France" (the transliteration of RFF! a better translation would probably be "Rail Networks France") maps are interesting- especially "la carte des lignes nouvelles en construction ou en projet (2013)" ("new lines in construction or planned".

Is anyone able from that to translate what the various project statuses listed on the left are? As far as I can tell, roughly:
Red: being built
Orange: project fully approved
Purple: Obtaining final approval
Blue: At public consultation phase
Green: proposals and route options being considered

Red = Under construction

Orange, purple and blue are phases in the very typically complicated (and not easily translatable into English) French legal process for public works. All public works must be ‘declared of usefulness to the public’ (Declaration d’Utilité Publique – DUP)

Orange means a project has obtained its ‘Declaration of Public Utility’ (DUP) following the public enquiry process, so construction can go ahead.

Purple means a project is currently going through the public enquiry process leading to the DUP

Blue means that the detailed plans needed to inform any future DUP are under way.

Green means preliminary studies are taking place (probably most simply translated as ‘proposed’)

Both blue and green are currently unlikely to happen following the government’s recent review.

I suppose potentially not all that helpful unless you happen to live quite close, but I got a reasonable track map/atlas for Benelux at Ian Allen in Waterloo. I'm sure they do a German version. It's only a dozen pages long, and just bound in a ring binder thing, and cost just a few GBP.

Yes, that's the 'Ball' series, successor to the pukka hard copy Ian Allen European railway atlases done by Mr Ball. Covers all of Europe

For France, RFF used to have a pdf map with all the stations listed on it, but that is no longer available.
