France - Loisir tariff

Hello,

I have a question about the 'Loisir' tickets, not TGV but TER trains. Are they valid only for the specified train or can I catch an earlier/later train?

"Le tarif Loisir réduit est disponible pour les trains TGV et Intercités à réservation obligatoire et sur une sélection de destinations de trains Intercités et TER sans réservation obligatoire"

So, the reduced Leisure fare is available for TGV and Intercity trains with compulsory reservations and on a selection of destinations on Intercity and TER trains without compulsory reservation.

Which means that you don't need a reservation for TER, and for some Intercity journeys. You do need to make sure that a Leisure fare is available on your selected train, of course.

TER services are subsidised by the French regions so discount fares policy varies and is often attached to some kind of regional travel card rather than SNCF national tarifs like loisir. Best thing is to check on the SNCF site for the actual journey you want to make. A lot of TER services don't let you reserve seats anyway but if time is not an issue and you haven't booked in advance they can be a much cheaper way of getting from A to B. You'll need to put a 'via' in though for the website to show TER alternatives. voyages-sncf.com

NO TER at all offers reservation-much the same as in UK for local trains. But it is possible as such to reserve seats on the few remaining former Corail etc IC-trains. These may cover some distance in a region and be accessible for TER-cardholders there. f.e. Caen-Cherbourg for Normandie.
IF this ticket covers your route, you can use any TER-train on it.
