Thanks for all your help everyone with my recent fares enquiries, you have saved me a fortune :) I'd like help with one more please Fort William - Arbroath 13 April departing 11.40 and arriving 17.19 (but happy for it to be a slightly later arrival if cheaper). It's 2 adults, no railcards. Thanks.

Apparently there is only one type of advance ticket and it costs £35.10 per person. I'd hazard a guess that some sort of rover might be cheaper. Have to wait until our Scottish contingent logs on.

the advance fare is not available for your journey you have requested on the train.. but you can do this :

Fort William Bus Stn dep 1030 - Inverness Bus Stn arr 1216 Citylink Super Single for 2 adults £12.00 so £6 pound each

Inverness Train Station dep 1242 - Aberdeen arr 1454 2 x Std Advance Single £15.40 £7.70 each.

Aberdeen dep 1533 arr Arbroath 1624 2 x Std Advance Single £15.40 so again £7.70 each.

Information Checked at 22.26 23/03/2011 Total Cost for 2 Adults £42.80

hope this helps

If you're doing a lot of travel in Scotland then a Scottish Rover is brilliant value. Sadly the point-to-point fares are totally extortionate and no-one will ever buy a Fort William to Arbroath SVR (£92.60) they will simply drive instead, or take a coach, or cancel their trip. If FSR think people will pay that, then they need to think again. Of course, they don't actually care at all and won't think for one second.

Freedom of Scotland 4 in 8 (£28.50 per day)
Freedom of Scotland 8 in 15 (£19.15 per day)

There is also the Central Scotland Rover, 3 out of 7, anywhere between Glasgow, Dunblane, Kirkcaldy and North Berwick for £33.
