True, but where would it leave the forum members who want non-stop trains from Waterloo to Portsmouth and the like?

The introduction of HSTs screwed up the regular interval timetable, because the operators didn't have enough HSTs. I can't remember if this was the Ministry of Transport reducing the order, or sets being nicked for the Midland Main Line, or a mixture of both.
It was both. BR wanted 36 new build HSTs for Cross-Country (as it became) and further sets for the MML. It only got 18 authorised for XC and it became clear to InterCity that the MML had a good business case for some sets so sets were transferred from the Western internal and XC fleets.
