First train ride in years today

Went on my first ride in years on a train today. It was a Class 195, from Manchester Piccadilly to Deansgate

Only a short journey but liked it. The new 195s are good. However, the electrics inside are terrible. I was actually spotting at Manchester Airport the other day and spoke to a guy who worked on the 195s, he said the electrics inside were shocking. Turns out he was right haha

Since lockdown I did manage a short journey from Hemel Hempstead to Euston last weekend (cycled back) and that was the first train ride since February. For me 6 months of no trains is a very very long time.

It's quite easy to do. When my dad retired from the railway in 1996 I never used another train until 2003 when I met my partner.

End of free travel probably had something to do with it. At the same time I wasn't bothered any more about travelling by train at that point for leisure and had no reason to use it for anything else, any interest in trains waned for a bit as well, i'd found the pub.

It's ironic really considering the time I didn't travel by train was roughly between the ages of 16-25, it's probably the best period to have an interest in travelling the network!

I've always found trains a convenient way of travelling to -and more importantly- back from pubs. The two go together very well; a marriage made in heaven.

They made that more difficult for me, they closed our station in 1967.

I imagine some people go their whole lives without using railways for public transport purposes. It's not at all difficult in this country - you can drive basically anywhere and it's affordable to most people to do so. Certainly the majority of people use the railway less than once a month or never.

Guy who i was with Uni last year, quite a bit younger than me in his early to mid 20s had his first train ride, Glasgow to Edinburgh. Had to help him use TVM , what ticket etc. I know other people who never use train and use their car.
