First time spotting using interrail - depot visits

Hi,

I've looked at some of the threads that are very helpful about general movement around Europe. Is there any advice about visiting depots in Europe - are permits required or is there a more relaxed approach based on good safe behaviour & common sense? Also any advice on freight hotspots would be appreciated.
