Passed over my head on Colapit Heath viaduct yesterday afternoon, Wales-bound.

Two MTUs and our hired MML rake.

I would have got a picture if i had my camera with me, oh, and the fact that i was on my bike doing about 50 didnt really help either ;)

Hail All! <D
I thought that this had been knowlege for a while (I.E: For a few months) now!

Through pure coincidence, I ended up catching the train in question from Newbury to Reading last Tuesday morning...It was the 08:35 (Or around that time) FGW service to Paddington I think. If I'd have known that it was a point of interest for people here, I would have packed a camera and taken a few photos! :sad11:

You should have seen the look on some people's faces when it pulled in though...I mean, since when did MML serve Newbury and Paddington? :toothy10:

On that note; I'm not too sure of this as my memory is pretty useless anyway...But she seemed to accellerate much faster than I would normally expect an HST to do. Is it possible that she could've had the MML Class 43's on her as well at the time? :happy8:
(Could this explain why I've started taking a heavy interest in the HST in general recently?)

My understanding is that FGW only have a rake of MML Mk3 trailers and not any power cars.

They do have a few ex-MML power cars, as well as bits & bobs of coaching stock, currently in store at Laira awaiting move to Brush Loughborough & Bombardier Derby.

What I meant was they are only borrowing coaches from MML and not power cars.

Is it me or are the new FGW MTU engined power cars slower at excellerating than the Valenta engined ones from a standing start or is there a running in period on new MTU engines.I understood that the MTU power cars have "optimised tractive effort control" that suppose to give better excelleration. Can anyone enlighten me on this one.

It seems to depend how they drive. I've had some sets where they get up to speed in no time. And many in which it seems to take hours to get above 40mph. Take the 1630 Padd-Paignton yesterday. Took forever to start out of Bristol/Weston/Taunton/Tiverton/Exeter... Seems some powercars may vary, or it may the drivers.

FGW imposed driving policy.

Compare with GNER or MML and you'll notice the difference.

They certainly don't have a problem going past where I work. Leaving Plymouth, once past Tavistock Junction (where my workplace is situated just past the yard), trains have to more or less floor it on the run up Hemerdon Bank, & comparing the Valenta's with the MTU's, the MTU's certainly seem to manage the run quicker than the Valenta's do. But at the same time, it depends on driver style as well, & you do notice that. Some driver's floor it once rounding the curve going past Tavistock Junction, other's seem to wait until going past the yard before flooring it.

P.S. Before you ask, no I didn't decide to work where I do because the railway runs next to it, just a perk of the job lol. :p
