But when you accidentally fall asleep and go past your stop do you think "oh never mind I will just avoid the ticket barriers and go shopping" or do you think "oh bugger what time is the next train back"?

2 very different situations.

With most TOCs, I'd attempt to pay for the extra, but if in Northernland, you might be more likely to get a "Fixed Penalty Notice" if you approach staff to pay for the extra ticket than if you just walk out.

Just a quick update for the thread. I've had a letter from Northern Rail today regarding my case. Following the letter I sent the a couple of weeks ago, explaining my circumstances in more detail, they have decided to let me off with a formal warning and are only asking for the £1.90 excess I originally owed.

Thankfully a bit of common sense, or at least benefit of the doubt, seems to have won them over and I'll be sending them the cheque on Monday along with a note thanking them for their understanding.

My advice for anyone in the same situation would be: if you have a genuine excuse for your fine, put it in writing as soon as you can (they didn't give me an option of replying but I did it anyway), express your regret and make it clear you want to help them resolve the situation. It would appear that they are more understanding than you might think!!
