Fareham station is to be re developed pretty soon. It's getting another bridge at the London end, for disabled access and the newsagents is being replaced by Costa Coffe {or whatever they are called}

You've got the option of being served by Arkwright, Corporal Jones, or a variety of women that seem to be always on. Always the same crap selection of sandwiches.
For the amount of business we put their way, they have never let one of us off even so much as a penny. You get more conversation in an Undertaker's.

Err, where did this story come from. I live in Fareham and have never heard of any proposed development - either in the short trem or long term.

I did see some SWT men there a month or so back trying to wotk out where to put the ticket barriers that SWT say are coming. That is all the development I have ever heard of.

I agree that the present footbridge is not that good as it is only partially covered. A new footbridge at the London end will cost a packet. I suspect that most people would still use the existing one (assuming it is kept) as it is closer to the entrance.

They are building a temporary depot on the site of the PARS office, work started last week

They dominate the coffee shops on the motorway services it seems. I swear every single one I passed between London and Newcastle on the M1 had a huge Costa Coffee sign on the signs approaching them!

Might be doing a GC bash in the next couple of weeks...<D

The work at Fareham is part of the same program of DDA works that is putting a new footbridge+lifts in at Fratton, lifts at Havant, lifts at Haslemere and barriers on the upside at Havant.

Come out of Fareham tunnel 1 and walk towards Eastleigh. You go past Funtley pond, then S bend to bring you back straight and past Knowle Halt, then curve left and through Tapnage tunnel. Up past Barn farm and curve right then left to bring you into Botley.
Botley to Eastleigh, you leave Botley and it's straight until you are across the Hamble river, then another S bend brings you to Hedge End station. Hedge to Eastleigh works is dead straight, before one final tight right hand curve to bring you into Eastleigh station

The track only remains in place for about 2 miles to where it used to serve the Navy Ammunition Depot at Frater. The rest of the track was lifted many years ago, much of it is now used as a cycle track but some of it has an industrial estate housing and a school built on it. Part of Gosport station is listed and remains as a derelict hulk, its difficult to see why as its isolated even from the cycle track section by buildings.

Coming back to the Fareham station bridge again. Are they planning to remove the old one or keep it ?

If they keep it, I will say that the new bridge will become a white elephant as it will make the journey from platform to entrance longer. Hardly anyone will use it.

If they remove it, there will be lots of disgruntled passengers as they will now have to walk longer distance for little good reason.

It does seem to be a lose/lose situation. The only beneficiaries will be disabled people who will have a lift.

Is this the best way to spend limited resources ? I think not.

A car park on the upside would be good as the current one does get full. However that will mean another Entrance has to be built. The project gets bigger and bigger.

The staion that really needs a new footbridge is Southampton Airport Parkway. The current one is very narrow for the volume of people and totally uncovered. I know there has been talk about it for ages but nothing has been done so far. That should be far higher up any priority list than any work at Fareham.
