It is irrelevant. It would have been relevant had you not decided to tell the staff that you had started from a different station. If they were trying to penalise you for not buying a ticket before boarding it would be very relevant, but that isn't the case here.

As I said earlier, you don't want to give the impression that you are making excuses or trying to put the blame elsewhere. That will not help you.

Would it be worth phoning Prosecutions back and giving them my specific details in time for the documentation to come through to them from Piccadilly? In that way we might be able deal with it over the phone? Or, alternatively, should I just wait for the letter in the post?

I would do this, it is what I did for my daughter. I didn't have to write any letters etc and its a lot faster to get closure.

Also we actually did not receive a letter asking for an explanation or fixed penalty notice. First we heard was a court summons, so my advice would be, be proactive and sort it out, don't wait for things.

Dear all,

As promised, I'm posting to let everyone know the outcome.

Sent letter to Northern on 17/08/15 and phoned into today (3/09/15) to check on progress. Coincidently Northern made their decision not to prosecute this morning and so I paid £80 + fare owing to ital-uk over the phone.

I'm relieved and am very aware of how lucky I am to have this offence pardoned and kept out of court.

Behaviour never to be repeated again.
