I was delayed by 100 minutes in December last year on a Eurostar from London to Brussels. My (single) ticket was to 'any Belgian station'. I didn't pay extra for this add-on because I bought the ticket before they started charging extra for it.

According to the website, I am entitled to a complimentary one-way trip in the same class of travel as compensation. Will I be able to travel on any train with spare seats, or will I be restricted to selected trains of Eurostar's choosing? Could I even book the next train to leave St Pancras?

Will my free ticket be valid to any Belgian station?

The only significant delay I experienced with Eurostar was back in Feb when I was 120 late into Gare du Nord due to signalling problems. I was travelling Business Premier and received 50% of the cost of my single ticket back along with the offer of a complimentary journey which I was told is quota-controlled.

I was delayed 85 mins in March to Brussels. I was told I could get a free one-way ticket or 50% off a return. I didn't know compensation tickets are quota controlled so when I turned up last Sunday to book my one way compensation ticket from London to Paris for travel on the next train departing within the hour I was told there was no seats at all for the remainder of the day and the only trains I could take the following day was the very first and last departures of the day. I rebooked for the following Saturday instead. Compensation tickets are exchangeable once before departure so you have some degree of flexibility.

I would recommend booking your ticket at least a week in advance if you wish to travel on your preferred train. Availability is scarce on Friday and Sunday evenings. You can present the used ticket for the delayed trip at the ticket office or phone Eurostar Traveller Care and quote the booking reference for your delayed trip.
