Hi all,

I travel quite regularly between Lincoln and Nottingham/Leicester and recently there have been a few occasions where the unit has been swapped usually at Nottingham. This often leads to confusion with passengers and usually ends up in the train leaving 10-15 mins late. I was wondering is this something that is planned in advance or is it because the unit is out of miles or something and has to be taken out of service? Just curious to know

Could be any number of reasons, however it will normally be because a particular train is needed in the depot, either straight away or as part of a plan to ensure the required stock finishes in depot.

Generally no it wouldn’t be planned in advance as in theory the morning allocations should be done in such a way that if stock is known to need to finish in a specific place then it gets put on a suitable diagram. However issues arise during the course of a day leading to changes becoming necessary.

Many modern trains have systems that convey details of faults back to depots, that enables the TOC to swap sets on at key points. I caught a Waterloo to Weymouth train on Thursday. Normally the front set goes forward to Weymouth. On this train it became the rear as they wanted the front set at the depot. I guess at times, you might have sets out of position, due to disruption and they are due a scheduled exam.
