Unfortunately my friend has informed me he got a Penalty Fare (yes they do them - see http://www.tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/penalties-and-enforcement ).

The RPI boarded during his journey, but he was unable to produce his validated Oyster card. Although he found it before the end of his journey, the RPI had left. Is there much chance of appeal?

On his return journey, he heard the service was suspended, so travelled via a different route.

Think the OP means the RPI had moved into another carriage (pod) using the staff only connecting zipline.

The service was suspended. Ha ha. Only just got on to that, very slow of me, I am working lates though. Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Chances are the offence for which he was PF'd is failing to show a validated Oyster card on demand, rather than failing to actually pay the fare.

Unfortunately, there's no way to know after the fact whether your friend was travelling with a mate but they both went through on one touch-in. So if he were to produce his Oyster statement showing a touch-in, it wouldn't mean much.

However, it won't hurt to include a letter of appeal (along with a copy of his Oyster statement showing the fare paid) when he pays his penalty fare, the worst that happens is they refuse it.
