Edinburgh Waverley spotting query

Hello all,

Not 100% sure it will happen, but I might have some time to spend at Waverley station spotting and photting. I've not been there for ages, and last time I went spotting was yonks ago, but last time I was there on a Compass tour, I did a bit of bashing, and I remember there were 'human barriers' at platform access points.

Can you wander about without a ticket or is it essential to sign in? If so, what are the attitudes, hopefully they are a bit better than Paddington!

just wander in from Waverley steps or market Street. There are human blocks on Scotrail platforms at peak hours but it is no issue to enter the station

The bay platforms at the west (Glasgow/ Haymarket) side of the station, roughly numbers 12-18, are barrier protected but you should be able to wander pretty much everywhere else.

I just asked the gate line guy if i could take some photos - he said yes and let me through

The last but one time I was there to do photos, I knew I'd be there for a while so I went to the NR reception desk to ask - before I could even open my mouth or get my camera out, the clerk had already pulled out the signing in book and picked up a permit for me!

I obviously look exactly like what I am - an enthusiast!

Generally, as others have said, there are only human barriers at peak times (7am-9am, 4pm-6:30pm) but apart from then, you should be okay to roam the station as you wish. But, obviously, if you're going to be there for a while I'd still let the staff know what you're up to. Always better to be on the safe side!

Wasn't required in the end, it was a plan B option if spotting at the airport went out the window which it didn't, however it is useful info still for next years trip to Edinburgh Airport to do the tram to the city and then to do Waverley station
