Edinburgh to Exeter

Is it possible to get an advance ticket from Edinburgh to Exeter on a Direct train. While I've suggested plane as the better option my friend would rather take the train. Is it possible to do for less then £100 without railcards to bring it down to being similar to the airfare of about £85 inc taxes, luggage and other charges?

looking on the East Coast booking engine I can see fares as low as £25 each way if you go via London and buy two seperate advance purchase tickets.

It all depends though on how far in advance you are travelling
which route you prefer to take
Do you mind going via a longer route which costs less?
do you mind changing trains (and possibly taking the tube across London?)
what time would you like to depart Edinburgh

No dates or times I'm afraid, just pricing up for July/August time. Direct Train is needed, she isn't a good traveller, not fussed by train type. Can be flexible with dates/times as we can work around...

Rough journey time is 7h40m, with the train running through Yorkshire, into Birmingham and then on via Bristol. It's a direct train.
