Can't see it in only journey planners. Not clear if you can just turn up an go on it or where else it calls. I suspect it will avoid Glasgow Queen Street and flow the sleepers route round Glasgow.

You can just turn up. Possibly it was a response to WhestRail's venture (www.whestrail.co.uk) which has reduced to just one steam trip in September due to ScotRail's fares offer and unhelpful response about using their trains in one direction.

Also not clear if normal tickets, ALRs etc would be valid on this service.

i dont think normal tickets will be valid as the cheapest return ticket from edinburgh to oban is 45.50 superoffpeak.

Listen folks, I've been to Oban, and can report that five hours is waaaaaaaaaaaay too long. The only thing I can think of that's been more ridiculous lately is Spitfire's bonkers tour from York to Whitby, giving 10 hours (that's ten hours. Count 'em: TEN HOURS!) in every goth's favourite seaside resort.

I much prefer a direct Edinburgh to Wick or Kyle of Lochalsh service even if it was a extended Euston to Edinburgh service carrying onto these two places.

I've been to Oban and trust me, 2 hours was more then enough!

You could...

12.05 - Arrive & enjoy light lunch and stroll around Oban.
14.00 - Set Sail for a return trip to Mull
15.46 - Arrive back in Oban, start walking Briskly towards McCaig's Folly.
16.05 - Enjoy McCaig's Folly
16.15 - Walk back towards Railway Station, buying something to eat on the train for the return Journey.
16.59 - Board return service.

I did recall a nice restaurant on the harbour front which did a nice Haggis, only thing is I didn't have time for more then one plate of the stuff,

What I would add is that the Mull service is prone to delays in summer, the ship has just 14 minutes to get turned around for it's next departure. On summer days, the delays can get pretty hefty if she sails full each time, as it takes considerably more than 14 minutes to unload and then load 72 cars per crossing. This may also be compounded by the fact that, AFAIK, CalMac only had one guy responsible for both the berths. This means that only one ship can berth at a time, and can add pretty big delays if another ferry arrives or departs first.

In other words, do not join the vessel unless you are certain that you will have ample time to catch the train back.
