I did think it would be quicker than a Rail Replacement Bus, what really surprised me is that it isn't.

It's even more of a gap if you can get people back onto the rail network in North London / South Herts. Peterborough to Potters Bar or Borehamwood can be done in about 90 minutes by coach and can get to Kings Cross or St Pancras in 20 mins. Driving from either of those to Kings Cross is the slow part.

Maybe so - but fortunately the rail network isn't run for the convenience of a minority of refuseniks who don't like buses. And if there needs to be engineering work, the balance needs to be struck between impacting those who's travel is regular and consistent - which the commuter networks are, compared to those who's travel is discretionary and has less impact if their journey is disrupted which will be true of many longer distance travellers. The rail network are, quite rightly, ensuring the larger number are not disrupted - and there are more people travelling Cambridge - London than London - Leeds / York / Newcastle on a daily basis.

That's a very cavalier attitude considering:

A) many of these works are likely to be at the weekend when the regular commuters are scarcer and

B) leisure travel seems to be accounting for more revenue than commuting currently anyway.

Seeing as this is the speculation sub forum. If EWR ever reaches Peterborough and Cambridge, could trains divert at/near Peterborough onto EWR and then the existing WCML (not HS2) from Bletchley into Euston?
AIUI there has never been a junction planned where EWR crosses the ECML, either at St Neots South or Tempsford. All the consultations just show a line crossing above the ECML. Looks as though diversions from the vicinity of Peterborough straight onto EWR are not possible at all.

There are some proposed All Line Blocks in the Engineering Access Statement for 2025, so somebody needs to get their think hats on about alternative routes

27 and 28 December 2024 near York
Two weekends February/March 2025 south of Peterborough
Four weekends October/November 2025 Doncaster to York

Already being discussed with TOC/FOC/NR. Doesn't mean anyone will divert though.

Could you point to some figures for this? I'm not trying to needle, just interested to see the various different estimates and reports that are out as accurately defining purpose of travel is not easy.

Matches my understanding as well. Diversion would need to be P'bro-Cambridge-EWR, or P'bro-St Neots(ish) shuttle and change.

Rmt have sent an email out to members regarding overcrowding that happened in February, I've attached the screenshot that I was sent by a friend this afternoon about this

Unless RMT become a timetable participant and can respond to the engineering access statement, I'm not entirely sure what they expect to happen, TOC/FOCs are well aware of what engineering work there is as they play a part in its development.
