There seems to have been little coverage of what was a major incident, affecting 1000s of passengers over 24 hours, in the media. Is this because we are all becoming immune to such large scale problems on the East Coast, ie what commentators are fond of calling the 'new normal'. (Feels like there's about one every other month on the route currently.)

Hope not because the handling of these incidents can surely be improved. Or, better still, manage the OHLE/train interface more effectively?!!

There's probably a media view that if it's not Avanti failing again it's not interesting.
LNER is pretty much immune from criticism as a "nationalised" operator, because they can't be fired.
Funny how the "Anyone but Virgin" vibe on the ICWC franchise/contract has turned into "Anyone but FirstGroup".

Disruption at Doncaster today? I've just come past the station, and there are quite a few delayed trains, with services that seem to have been held elsewhere on the route. Looking at Traksy, there seems to be a queue forming around Shaftholme junction as well.

Something about "emergency services dealing with an incident"?

There was a report on the BBC website:

Passengers faced severe train disruption in the East of England on Friday evening.

Thameslink, and London North Eastern Railway (LNER), said people travelling through Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire were delayed due to issues with overhead wires between Peterborough and Stevenage, which blocked all lines.

I suspect that the lack of coverage may be a Friday thing, with very few journalists at work doing what passes for research these days, looking at social media.

Person hit by a train on platform 3 (alive and taken away by ambulance).
Lines now reopen.

between the Cambridge Road bridge and the start of the up platform, there's a down slow to down fast crossing that fits in there just fine
But it is only 25mph, and takes up all of the space. On the up side that space is taken up by the exit from the yard.

I think fundamentally the issue is that when the ECML suffers a catastrophic issue like the one on Friday there simply isn't the capacity available on the MML for roughly four nine/ten-car trains per hour of ECML passengers to be accommodated on the two trains per hour of MML even with some passengers also being diverted via the WCML via Manchester and abandoning/deferring their journeys. So however you try and do it whether you try and ferry people towards 10-car services, if you try and cancel stops or insert stops, or whatever you try, the MML will become rapidly overloaded. It is often overloaded just dealing with its own passenger flows! So we can try coming up with ideas to improve the situation but there will be an element of shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic. The MML simply doesn't have the capacity to cope with that volume of displaced passengers.

Of course in an ideal world LNER would be able to divert some of their own services from Kings Cross onto the MML but there is no easy connection (I've done it on Hull Trains, it's quite the shuffle to get from the ECML to MML!), no route knowledge (and it'd be a pain to maintain), pathing would be "interesting", and you probably only need to use it once or twice a year anyway. The slightly less mental option would be to send passengers via GA to Cambridge and onto Peterborough from there where they could intercept LNER services being turned around. But, of course, that also falls over as the link between Ely and Peterbrough is, in most hours, two trains per hour both of which are usually only two or three cars. Good luck accommodating the passengers off, say the 1600, 1603, 1630 and 1633 on that!

I remember a few years back travelling on the Midland Mainline when the ECML was stopped due to weather conditions.

There were passengers sat and stood along the aisle of first class - and this was an 8 carriage HST, so a lot more capacity than available nowadays

I guess lack of staff is seen as a TOC problem, whereas lack of wires is an NR problem.

I was grateful that I abandoned ship shortly after 19:30 and went across to St Pancras with about 10 mins to spare. I did get a seat on the 20:02 EMR train, but there was zero usable mobile data signal (and very patchy mobile phone signal) - unsure if a result of the extra passenger count, the build of the train or the network infrastructure. Usually I keep data signal all the way from Newcastle until Peterborough where it gets patchier until you approach London.

Point being in my attempts to book a hotel in Sheffield, with a view to getting across to Doncaster on Saturday morning to get a train back up, the price had gone up from £48 to £76 for the Travelodge near Sheffield station. Wasn't sure if LNER would pay or not, so got off at Chesterfield and asked my elderly parents to put me up for the night. Fortunately XC very kindly let me stay on the direct train from C'field up to Newcastle on the Saturday, and was only 12 hours late home. I think if I'd have stayed in Sheffield, I'd have wound up on the same XC train anyway as Doncaster was still non-serviced for the morning as far as I could tell.

From keeping an eye on this thread and the LNER app, seems northbound services on the ECML didn't resume properly until later in the day, so to your point, while there isn't the capacity to get big numbers of ECML passengers out of London when problems occur, it seems like it's in people's interest to get as far north as possible by any means necessary.

At least once you're in the top end of the East Mids/South Yorks, you can probably carry your way up the country by several different methods, if ticket acceptance is in place.

@yorksrob, 1st class was declassified on the Friday EMR train for that reason (too many people) with an announcement suggesting people claimed the difference back online.

I don't think it's an Avanti vs LNER or a nationalisation issue. It may be linked to how many London journalists appear to think 'the North' means Manchester and so think the WCML is the only route of any significance.

I think this is a class 22x issue.
