Or we could of course let the perfect be the enemy of the good and have no new railway and no new services…
But that is not the point is it ?
Every week we are having messages about climate change, cutting pollution, cutting use of fossil fuels, banning of ICE in less than 20 years, and here in the heart of the England shires, a brand new railway linking the two "thinking cities" is going to be using new diesel trains because they cannot afford to electrify it ? Oh and at the same time, trains which could operate it have just been dragged off to the scrapyards.

There is no perfect about it but the whole point is that much of the formation doesn't have any track on it, so while the diggers re working on the building site, the very first job should be planting the bases for the stanchions. It is much easier to send a crane in to bolt the steel work to pre fitted bases, but to open the railway, then maybe close it for electrification in subsequent years is false economy and harmful to the new railway's development.

Are all the existing stations on MV to be retained when EWR is completed? I assume the new Oxford-Cambridge service will be some sort of regional-express like if not intercity and likely wouldn't call at all MV stations.

Could there be a separate local stopping service running on EWR for the MV stations, possibly not enough space for the faster non-stopping services to run past?

This thread seems to discuss the "5 stations" proposal among other things: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/east-west-mainline-interchanges.227364

Not necessarily. They’re retained in the present scope which is only as far as Bedford, but beyond that to Cambridge it’s all subject to consultation and future decisions. I see @Bletchleyite has found a link where it’s all been discussed before, there are other threads as well. It’s not actually a rolling stock question though, is it?

That isn't quite the gist I got from the network rail document.
They said rationalisation of the line and number of stations, inferring they would be planning to close a couple of the least used, and re-site a couple of others to compensate.

As for the rolling stock, again in the NR document, they are very much of the view that EWR would serve very well not just as a A to B passenger route, but also a freight and diversionary route as required, so in their view bi-modes such as 75x would be the preferred option, leaving scope for longer distance trains from ECML,MML or WCML to interchange under the wires.
