I can see SWT Driver's point, but generally the market for a slow through service isn't enough - Anglia Crosslink failed partly because of the slow amble along the NLL. What we need is Crossrail 2 as a Woking - Wimbledon - Victoria - Pic - KX - Hackney - Harlow service.

Something like that would make sense

Best of all, take a look at the forward thinking French & Parisians!

Their system whilst it doesn't necessarily offer the frequency or speed, it offers convenience & a good quality service, which is stable & doesn't fall over at the slightest nudge!

But can you imagine anyone at TfL promoting a Crossrail 3 route from Watford Junction to Sevenoaks...? (Not to mention that Crossrail 2 will probably not happen until the year 2347 anyway )

EDIT: I think that the Métro is too complicated anyway, and that they have too many RER routes.

That could be joined to the Thameslink route by a short tunnel from near Euston to a junction around where Kings Cross Thameslink was. So if Thameslink is to be scaled back from 24tph to 20 tph, that would leave room for 4tph from Watford in years to come when a further upgrade is due. (They could call it Thameslink 2500). It could be financed by bankers who will by then have received £4zillion in bonuses. :D

If you look at how much Financial Services firms and their staff pay in Income Tax, Corporation Tax, NI, VAT, Non-Domestic Rates, Council Tax, etc. you could argue they paid for Thameslink 2000. For that matter you could argue they pay for the subsidies that keep fares low on lots of lines, and the new stock. In fact some of the banks literally paid for the new rolling stock. They own at least on of the ROSCO's.
