So we’re going to see the mighty York City at Hartlepool this Saturday, and while I’m there I wouldn’t mind ticking off the stations between Thornaby and Newcastle. Notably LNER also have Durham coast diverts that weekend. The ideal route would probably be York - Newcastle - Hartlepool - Thornaby - York. So a couple of questions:

Would any station (eg Sunderland) work with a return ticket for this route, with permitted routes via Newcastle and Durham Coast/Thornaby? I assume no splits would be allowed, with the LNER going nonstop York/Northallerton to Newcastle.

With LNER on Durham Coast Diverts, would a York-Northallerton return and a Tyne and Tees day ranger be permitted?

Yes... Though it wouldn't be valid on the rail replacement bus to Darlington from Northallerton.

Tyne Tees Day Ranger info

The routeing restriction is:
NOTE: Not valid on the direct route between Darlington and Northallerton in either direction.

Only valid within the area shown on the map below.
It seems you're complying with this restriciton.

Why not a return to Newcastle? No splits would be allowed anywhere but Northallerton? Also no doubling back except with the ranger ticket. But yes, you may break your journey on the off peak day return at any station, as it's a permitted route anyway.

I didn’t imagine Newcastle via Durham Coast would be a permitted route, but if it is then so much the better

Note that the routeing guide map shows a route via Middlesborough to be valid, the map does not show any “doubling back” even though the rail layout means that you would pass through Thornaby twice.

The map actually just shows that you can travel via the Middlesbrough Routeing Point Group (RPG), rather than Middlesbrough specifically. The RPG includes Thornaby, Eaglescliffe and Middlesbrough; RPGs are indicated through the use of a green square rather than a green circle.

Allowing the double back here makes sense, as not all trains call at all of these stations.

When tracing a mapped route, doubling back is permitted between stations belonging to an intermediate RPG, however this only applies for "interchange purposes" - thus implying you can't break your journey at a station where you are doubling back.
