Driving DMUs with different top speeds

ETCS is much the same, from my understanding.

ETCS on the 158s doesn't allow you to pick any speed - just 75mph or the default 90mph limit. Not sure how that compares to ATP at Chiltern.

Really? The maximum speed I ever managed to get out of a single 153 running on its own was 69 mph....and that was on a non-stop training run between York and Scarborough!

Was easily achieved between Ipswich & Norwich Crown Point.

To be fair, a few years ago at TfW as well as our own native fleet we had ex EMR, GWR and GA units running round still in their old colour schemes so it was easy to compare and the ex GA fleet were pretty quick. They were in pretty awful condition in every other respect mind.....

Isn't that very simple to do by just looking at the train?

Yes, a driver is expected to check the length and consist of their train, particularly noting whether there are any units with lower maximum speeds in the consist and so on.

ATP allowed the driver to input any speed into the system up to 100mph. Always amusing to set another driver's train up with a maximum speed of 20mph and watch as the ATP dumped the brake as the train left the station.
