...and in the event of an accident, wouldn't you wan't a sturdier, albeit heavier, under frame anyway?

That's what I was just thinking. Having vehicles running buffer to buffer with no strong connection between them sounds like a recipe for disaster.

The obstacle detection developed for driverless cars might mean that we could one day see driverless trains, but replacing physically strong connections between vehicles really is a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it..."

Completely driverless trains (given that these already exist on metro systems, so it's not a big step) are far more viable than completely driverless cars.

Given that the driver's job is mostly to do precisely what the signaller tells him to do (plus the safety role, and checks and balances), if I had to choose one member of staff on board, I can see why a view that a guard (DLR-style) would be better than a driver might prevail. Two better of course
