Just seen this on Newsnight:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/8245312.stm

It will be 25 years on Thursday since British scientist Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys discovered the DNA fingerprint. Claire Marshall joined him in his laboratory to talk about his breakthrough and the changes it has wrought over the last 25 years.

Quite an interesting section, you should be able to catch up with it later on iPlayer.

To be fair DNA itself was discovered in the 1950s by Watson and Crick! This discovery owes its genesis to those two.

And announced to the world at The Eagle pub in Cambridge, one of my favourite watering holes!
