DLR Strikes (Cleaners only)

It was announced that the DLR staff will be striking for 4 days. Does anyone know what the expected services will be?

It is indeed cleaners:

RMT members working as cleaners on the DLR will begin strike action on Thursday over a lack of sick pay.

Bidvest Noonan the contractor at the centre of this storm, has failed to offer company sick pay to its staff despite the fact a fellow contractor Amulet did so on the DLR.

Both contractors operate on DLR under KAD who is a company hired by TfL to run the service.

RMT has tried repeatedly to engage with Bidvest Noonan over the issue but the contractor said it was “discussing the matter with TfL,” despite having had more than six months to respond to the union’s demand for contractual sick pay.

With no progress and no sign of meaningful engagement from the employer, members have no choice but to take strike action.

RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “Bidvest Noonan on the DLR have behaved appallingly and not made any offer on company sick pay that is remotely acceptable.

"Their refusal to engage properly with the union shows the contempt local company representatives have for their staff who do a vital job on DLR.

"Our members will not put up with this appalling treatment and are prepared to take sustained strike action if necessary."

Not like they’re found in a particularly clean condition as it is.

Do DLR cleaners work during the day or only out of hours? I have never seen cleaners at any line terminus and the only one I don’t use is Beckton

All employers are required to pay Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). Some employers also pay additional, company specific, sick pay. There is no statutory requirement for any such additional sick pay.

True but given virtually the entire permanent workforce of every TOC’ FOC & NR receive it why would the lowest paid in the industry not believe they’ve a strong case for inclusion. ?

Looking outside of the rail industry, sick pay is a perk most decent employers offer.

Bidvest Noonan are fairly notorious for having pretty appalling working pay and conditions in a variety of contracts/industries, only offering the minimum that they are legally required too.
