DLR Record Attempt, Tuesday 30th August 2011

Assuming that the DLR extension via West Ham to Stratford International does open as planned in the next two days, this coming Tuesday Neil AH and I will be attempting to "break" the record for the fastest use of every station on the DLR network. I say "break" because the record will be reset and thus there will be no record to break, making a new record a certainty!

There will be 45 stations on the DLR upon the line's opening, which we currently aim to complete in 2:09. This is dependent on Southeastern running to timetable between Woolwich Arsenal and Lewisham, but otherwise our route is fairly easy. It starts at Beckton at 13:58 and finishes at Tower Gateway just over two hours later.

This proposal has been confirmed with Guinness World Records. However, the DLR record is not presented in the annual book, unlike the LUL challenge, and will instead be stored on their database. I would like to add that this proposal was mentioned after the Zone 1 Challenge last Thursday.

We are now having to change the day we do this challenge due to Stratford I international

I saw you two running through the interchange passage between the DLR and Monument this evening at around 16.50.

Really? Neil sent us the wrong way at Monument, onto the westbound train (following a sign for eastbound, to be fair), but we got the train we would have caught anyway (at Cannon Street).

As it happens, for some stupid reason the times on the DLR are 3 minutes behind National Rail, giving us an unexpected +0 connection at Woolwich Arsenal, which we missed. Even then however we were only 10 down out of Lewisham, but then we got delayed further at Westferry after a train was running slowly... quite possibly the one we should have been on from Lewisham.

In the end we scored a time which was a massive 27 minutes down on what we had planned. Even then though, we still smashed the existing record, and have several ideas as to how to improve our time by upwards of 30 minutes - potentially to a sub 2:00.

Our ultimate time was 2:35, which allowing for above mentioned problems we felt was actually quite good.
