What are the main differences?

They appear similar. I believe the 317/8 augmented 317/7s on the stansted express prior to the 379s presumably an increase in service levels

Crossrail is set to replace these trains?

Just to clarify, West Anglia Inner & Romford - Upminster services will transfer to London Overground and the Shenfield Metro will transfer to Crossrail.

Overground will replace the 317s it will be getting but it isn't clear which units these will be - they are already getting 17 315s (according to an article in Modern Railways).

The /8s were converted to work with the /7s on Stansted Express and have slightly more luggage space and different coloured moquette, the /5s are basically standard 317/1s (as per the Great Northern 317s) in all ways but number.

I do know that AGA are keeping the 317/6s and that's it.

Or to further clarify, Overground will replace the 315s and 317s on the West Anglia services they inherit, but only when the new build of units turn up in about 2018. Until then it soldiers on with the mix of 315s enhanced by 317s in the peaks.
