I was travelling from NRW to Frankfurt Airport on an ICE which arrived with 3 hours delay, resulting in missing my flight.

The guard said anyone in this position should go to the Info desk in the Frankfurt Airport station and ask for a hotel.

I did so but the desk person said no, no hotel vouchers, especially not on an Interrail pass.

Can I claim back the hotel cost or should I just write it off to experience?

Thank you

I believe you can try claiming compensation from DB in this situation for the extra costs but I offer no guarantees as to the likelihood of success!

There's also some more information here:

If your rail journey ended at the airport, then AFAIK DB has no more obligations, except when you had a rail/air combined ticket (depending on its conditions), which doesn't seem to be the case here.

However, it is incorrect that DB isn't responsible for assistance of passengers with an Interrail pass. The right to assistance doesn't depend on the ticket type you have and "the railway undertaking operating the delayed or cancelled service" (see EU Regulation 2021/782 article 20) is responsible to organise this. If they don't, then you can claim afterwards.
The URL provided above ("Your rights as a rail passenger") has a FAQ entry about Interrail and Eurail passes, where it says: "In the case of assistance according to Article 20 of Regulation (EU) 2021/782, the passenger is entitled to reimbursement of the costs incurred (e.g. for an overnight stay or an alternative means of transport). In this case, your request for reimbursement of these costs will be processed directly by the Passenger Rights Service Centre."
This means you can claim using the standard claim form.

Thank you. For context it was an evening flight so I was effectively stranded, although my Interrail ticket obviously would have let me travel elsewhere into the night, just not back to the UK which was where I was heading..

DB don't have any liability here, they got you to your destination (the airport).

This is precisely the kind of situation I'd expect a decent travel insurance policy to cover - cost of a new flight and hotel (and reasonable disbursements like meals) should be covered in most cases.
