This my first ever trip report...sorry if its awful! Suggestions, comments etc welcome

After a last minute quick decision, we drove to Long Eaton and purchased a Derbyshire Wayfarer Ticket for £11.60 for 1 adult and 1 child; not bad! First, we went on a short hop from Long Eaton to Derby. It was a XC 170 turbostar, and just about managed to get a seat as it was only going to Birmingham NS not Cardiff. One thing when we noticed on the 170 was that the windows didn't line up with the seats...particually annoying. We also could've managed to get a free journey!

At Derby, we went from 3B on the 222-112 Medrian EMT service to Chesterfield (service was from St. Pancras) It was due to leave at 11:07, but it was 11:09 and the doors still weren't open. We approached the platform staff who were just standing around chatting. We asked, one just nodded and then carried on chatting! Eventually, at 11:12 the doors opened and left 8 late at 11:15.

At Chesterfield, we alighted and went to visit the crooked spire cathedral and pottered around the shops. Catching the 12:47 from Chesterfield back to Derby involved listening to a very annoying rattly noise. 3rd free journey now!

Back at Derby, we ran across the bridge, just in time to catch the XC HST 43, 5 car set to Burton. This had come from Newcastle, and we stood in very cramped conditions standing in the compartment. Gladly alighting at Burton, we had a 5 minute walk there, decided there was nothing to do so walked back! Sitting in nice sunshine and visiting suprislingly very clean station toilets there was 10 minute wait for a service coming in from Birmingham. A huge mistake choosing the middle carriage - a hen party. Still not had our tickets checked. This 170 took us straight upto Sheffield.

At Sheffield, we had a long wonder round the station then a walk up the hill to the Millenium Gallery where there was a huge indoor tropical garden and lots of galleries. Sheffield-the steel city-made our kitchen kinves! Coincidently, were in display in one 0f the galleries. After a cheap cake and a drink, we pondered back down to the station.

A direct London Service leaving at 16:47 (222---) left on time and we had the carriage to ourselves! First time we had our ticket checked on this service. Very friendly staff and pulled back into Long Eaton on time. We left the camera at home, due to a big rush after a last minute decision so no pictures, sorry

Just a couple of things from your report:

The HST between Derby and Burton you mention, are you sure it was only 5 coaches? I thought they were all 6 and 7 on XC.

Secondly, a direct 170 between Burton and Sheffield? I think 170s are cleared to do short notice jobs to Manchester ex-Birmingham but I didn't know they were allowed via Derby.

Not bad for a first report ;) I don't know how you managed to get a 170 from Burton to Sheffield though! I think the only 170's through Sheffield are the ones to Cleethorpes!

Sorry! We were in a big rush at Burton, having lost the station while plodding around Burton! Pretty sure it was 3 cars though?

They are all 7 (very rarely one coach is locked out, but I've never had it happen to me) and there's no diagram that starts them at Newcastle. They only start at Leeds, Dundee, EDB, and York. (In the North that is).

why wouldn't they be cleared as they commonly run from Birmingham to derby and didnt MML occasionally use them up to Sheffield?

Hadn't realised so much rail was covered by the Derbyshire Wayfarer. Sounds liek you got your money's worth though.

Boundaries are:

Long Eaton, Burton, uttoxeter, Matlock, Buxton, New Mills, Sheffield, Alfreton plus 5 Derbyshire stations on the Robin hood Line and all bus services within this area.
