Hi All, and apologies if I am covering old ground but I am new to the world of Delay and procedures. We have just got home after Christmas and I am seeking some wisdom re a claim.

Details are, journey itinerary, Cardiff Central to Horsham, date 27/12/25. Planned times 19:19 departure from CDF, Paddington, Farringdon, East Croydon, 22:57 arrival at HRH. Ticket, Super Off Peak Return, paper type.
We arrived at CDF at 19:10 to find our Paddington train was delayed by, IIRC around 40 mins. We noted, however, that the 18:19 was now 60 mins late and yet to arrive. This train arrived at 18:16 so, as it had lots of green seat lights, we hopped on, hoping it would get us back on track. (sorry).
We were subsequently delayed by 30 mins between Bristol Parkway and Swindon by a points issue so the train was now +95 and we were +30.
The train crew then announced that due to the delay they were terminating at Reading.
The crew said other subsequent trains were able to carry on to Paddington but, as we were going to HRH, we looked around and there was a North Downs train leaving within a few minutes which seemed a better option. This meant we could pick up a Peterborough / Horsham Thameslink at Redhill or Gatwick to continue directly to HRH.

We began travelling to Redhill from Reading but soon saw that the Thameslink was showing delayed and then, subsequently cancelled. We elected to travel to Gatwick where there were more options, (including buses). We arrived at 23:23, scanned the boards and picked up the 23:38 service to HRH, arriving at 23:58. 61 minutes late.
Our question is, how to best approach the delay repay claim? Some of our delay was due to GWR (circa 34mins) but some was due to the cancelled Thameslink. Any advice is gratefully received and we must say all the staff were really friendly and helpful and it wasn't a bad journey all in all.

The claim is against the first TOC that materially impacted your journey (i.e. that was delayed enough to take your final arrival time at destination over the threshold), this being GWR I think.

The itinerary you should enter is the one you originally intended to do and would have done had there been no delay, and the amount of delay you select is based on when you actually arrived at your final station vs. when that original itinerary would have done.

It might be, if you did a bit of mitigation, that you get overpaid - FirstGroup's systems don't seem to check what they think you should get against what you ask for. I've had that from Avanti a few times where I've made an "impossible connection" and they've assumed I have missed it despite me correctly selecting the amount of delay I actually incurred.

Many thanks for your assistance. Yes it was GWR from CDF.

I will input the original itinerary and our actual arrival time, (amusingly 61 mins according to Tracksy) and assume this would be acceptable. This does accurately reflect our journey and, I suspect, may well have been quicker than if we had just waited for the planned trains and not been proactive in flexing our route to our best advantage.

Just to close the thread, GWR have approved 100% compensation on all our claims. Many thanks to @Bletchleyite for their sage advice.
