I’m not sure if this is a valid claim. If it isn’t, I can assure you I will not make a claim - I don’t wish to take money from the TOCs which I don’t deserve.
I was travelling today from Crewe to Liverpool Central, on an off peak Crewe to Liverpool Stations single. I was intending to travel on the 1426 Avanti service, which was cancelled. Instead I caught the 1432 LNR, which was 12 mins late at Crewe, and was terminated at Liverpool South Parkway. I looked at Trainpal, which offered me the same ticket I held for an itinerary involving a change onto Merseyrail at South Parkway, so I did this instead of changing at Lime Street, arriving at Liverpool Central 34 minutes late. I now doubt that was a valid journey as the ticket barrier at South Parkway rejected my ticket (and I was waved through by the member of staff who did not check my ticket)
If this claim is valid, should I claim from Avanti, who cancelled the original train, or LNR, whose train was delayed (if that train had been on time I would have been only 10 minutes late)
