The South Shields museum and art gallery is a pretty decent way to kill half an hour as well. Impressive architecture too.

If you are into trendy beer and 'hipster' style small businesses then the Ouseburn is a good call - easily accessible either by walking east along the quayside or from Byker Metro station (or busses to Byker, get off at Morrisons).

If in Tynemouth, note the station market is on every Saturday and Sunday.

Just been on the daytrip yesterday; had a great time with the missus. We started off walking down from the station past the castle and then enjoyed views of the riverside as we walked over the Millenium Bridge; ended up walking all the way to Gateshead to get a metro back over the Tyne which was rather fun. Then we rode a metro to North Shields for the ferry ride (we used the All Zone day ticket, £5.70 each which was great value considering the ferry was included in the fare), deciding to stay on the ferry when it turned back from South Shields. Afterwards, it was the metro one stop to Tynemouth and yes, it was stunning so thanks so much for the recommendation: the station architecture was on point (beats every other T&W metro station hands down); the high street leading to the coast was nice and grand; and the coastal views with the castle and cliffs were well worth it! To top it all off, the fish & chips were incredible; had mixed prawn and cod pieces from Longsands Fish Kitchen and they were definitely worth the otherwise steep tenner for a generous helping in a nice box. We both enjoyed it while overlooking King Edward Bay, despite the missus being scared of the seagulls that were swooping round  After we went back to the city centre (Monument), we were just roaming around Eldon Square and it was quite overwhelming how many places we could walk to and explore (was unsure which direction to walk in), so we decided to walk up to Haymarket and then get a metro back down to Central, where we enjoyed some views of the city from the Tyne Bridge (walked about halfway along it before walking back) and then headed back to the station to relax while waiting for our train back since we were tired after all the walking we did. Wasn't possible to cover everything I wanted to do, but we definitely enjoyed what we managed to do. Highlights were the Riverside Walk to Millenium Bridge, Tynemouth (King Edward Bay) and the Shields Ferry ride.

Good to hear that you enjoyed your time on Tyneside.

Making me feel homesick!
