Day trip from Berwick to Edinburgh

I’m looking to travel from Berwick upon Tweed to Edinburgh on Sunday next week and return the same day. It’s for a theatre performance, so the return time isn’t exactly known. I was under the impression that LNER had these new fangled Advances that allowed a certain amount of flexibility for a slightly higher price. However I can’t seem to see these on the LNER booking site. Failing that, is there a different destination I can book to to get an off peak return, that allows me to exit/entry at Edinburgh Waverley?

Such tickets are only available for journeys to and from the London area, and not for other LNER journeys. For flexibility you have the Off Peak Single which London area journeys don't have.

If you are using our ticketing site, the best way to do this is search for Berwick to Edinburgh (one way) and choose the trains you want, and once that's in your basket, add another journey, swap the origin & destination and choose Filters > Flexible tickets only.

You could buy an off peak return to Edinburgh. The snag is that they only come in "Crosscountry only" and "TPE only" flavours. While there are return tickets you could buy which aren't restricted to one train company, it would be cheaper to buy a single each way.

If I was buying off peak singles for this (rather than advance tickets), I wouldn't buy them until the day I go. There are always unreserveable seats on the train, so I don't need to worry about getting on. And, if the service falls to pieces before travel and I can't get to Edinburgh, I won't need to chase a refund for train tickets I hadn't yet bought.
