CVR driver experience

Anyone done a Driver Experience day at the Churnet Valley Railway? Was it good? Any comments welcome as I'm considering doing it.

I've never done it but i'm sure you could talk one of the drivers on a preserved railway into it for free, the price that preserved railways ask for to drive a train is ridiculous, then again it must be brilliant but the £200 or more which it usually is should do you for the full day driving around.

A driver at a peserved railway will certainly not let you drive a train for free - preserved railways have to comply with standards with regard to training and operations just like any other line, and when incidents occur, they are investigated by HMRI/RAIB just like on the big railway.

For free? Who do you think has to cover the fuel costs, insurance, wear, tear and miscellaneous lube oils? You are having a laugh.:roll:

Of course you can do it for free. Join a line, help out, work your way up the metaphorical ladder to the position of driver/fireman/secondman and yes it costs you nothing, apart from getting filthy, getting up at the crack of dawn, explaining to your significant other that you are committed again this weekend.

Not forgetting that when all the (paying) passengers have gone home you still have to dispose of the loco after a long day. Oh, and then drive home.

Not ridiculous costs, just realistic.
