Never seen trains going through a crossing with the barriers up before due to a failure, but first time for everything...assume that at some point someone in a van arrives to manually get them down so they aren't up?

Crossing failed at Hungerford so lights were put on and just sounding/flashing, train was talked past a red and paused on platform for a while and then headed through, using horn. Saw one go that way and assume next few might have done.

Have been on a train in Serbia that screeched to a halt across a crossing with its barriers up though the signal had been apparently clear (was window hanging, know nothing about the ins and outs of Serbian signalling, but Green is pretty universal).

Standard procedure for if the barriers won’t lower. The interlocking will prevent the clearance of the protecting signal, and therefore the train will be ‘talked past’ that signal at danger, with the driver advised to proceed at extreme caution and to be prepared to stop short of any obstruction.

Someone in a van would indeed be dispatched to lower the barriers, and/or repair them.

I imagine the failure was heat related.

If all four barriers remained up, that's a control system failure. If only one barrier lowered, then that's more likely to be a hydraulic power pack problem. The exit barriers only lower after the entry barriers have been proved to have fully lowered.

The BR 843 barrier system doesn't need any power to lower, they descend using gravity but slowed and controlled by a hydraulic circuit.
