Cross-London tickets

Soon be travelling from Hemel Hempstead to Charing Cross (tube).

Is there a ticket I can buy to travel to to Charing X (mainline) or similar, or does it need to be a travelcard?

Assuming off-peak (arriving into Euston after 10:00
A cheap day return to Euston costs £10.70.
A return to Charing Cross on Oyster will then cost £3.
Alternatively, on paper tickets, a zone 1-2 travelcard will cost £5.30
A all zone travelcard from Hemel Hempstead is £16.
Your best bet, however, on paper tickets is a cheap day return from Hemel to New Cross/St Johns/Deptford, priced at £14.

Advantix Traveller quotes a fare of £10.70 for a CDR to Charing Cross (same price as London Terminals ticket but presumably not the same validity). If the ticket office can't/won't sell it to you then I'd go for the New Cross/St Johns/Deptford option.

No, this is a London Terminals ticket. If you double-click on the fare it tells you that.

There'd be 14 travelling. I can see them getting annoyed. Anyone got any ideas on group discounts? I forgot they existed!

You'd just be leaving the tube at Charing Cross like anyone else would have to (your ticket will work the tube barriers) and you wouldn't be returning

The staff need not ever now. You simply walk through the LUL ticket ticket barriers and out of the station entrance. No staff at Charring Cross (BR) will ever actually see your ticket.
A group save 4 to Euston costs £21.40. Get 3 lots of these (covering 12 people), and either cover them with zone 1-2 travelcards or Oyster to Charring Cross. The remaining 2 people should then get Hemel-New Cross tickets. I am not sure whether there is an even better way to do it.

Number 91 bus (I think it is) from outside Euston to Charing Cross?? Takes about 20-25 minutes and 90p single each way with Oyster (not sure about without oyster), certainly cheaper and arguably less hassle than the tube.

Ah. Didn't think of that. So a Hemel > New Cross ticket for example would open barriers at all of Euston Mainline, Euston Underground and Charing X Underground?

I do this every 6 months or so, is intersting to know for future. Ta!

Any ticket with the "+" symbol on the route (in the case of HML-NWX it is "+ANY PERMITTED") you can use for entry/exit at interchange stations between LU/NR. There are some exceptions but it's not relavent in your case. You can't break your tube journey at any other non-interchange station (ie: you're not allowed to leave the tube at, say, Bond Street).

Ah cheers all. Another strange question, but kinda related - can you put more than 1 person on an Oyster card? ie touch in three times at Oxford Circus, touch out three times at Bank?

Sorry to bring this up again - but is the "groupSave" discount specific TOC only, or can it cross between two TOCs services?

The Groupsave tickets are valid on most services operated by:


· c2c

· Chiltern Railways

· East Midlands Trains (only on flows where there is a CDR fare)

· First Capital Connect

· First Great Western

· First Scotrail (between Edinburgh and Glasgow only)

· London Midland

· National Express East Anglia

· Southeastern

· Southern

· South West Trains

There are exceptions to this though, it is not valid in first class, on journeys wholly within West Midlands PTE area, on sleepers services, to underground destinations, on combined train/bus fares or with any other discounts. Some days are also excluded, and tickets which do not have time restictions are not valid before 0930 (Bedford 0915).

Other than this they are valid as the normal ticket type would be.
