Due to a change in my circumstances Falkirk Council owe me over a £100 in overpayments.

A new statement was issued on the 17th October to that effect.

Being a patient chap I waited in anticipation of the "cheque dropping on the mat"

No sign of it so I rang them this afternoon to find out what the delay was.

Apparently they are upgrading the Computer System which is taking till DECEMBER 9th. I "should receive a cheque in January"
PHP:

I wonder if the shoe was on the other foot whether they would be so patient with regard to waiting nearly three months if I owed them money ?

cornwall Council owed me around £100, they sent me a bill recalculation, and it just showed my next 4 month's payments reduced by £25 each.

Yes, but I'm paid up till the end of the year so the buggers owe me money overall for 2012/2013 :p

Bournemouth Borough council once came round with 2 cheques totalling over £2000 in overpayments because I pointed out to them that a little known exemption applied to me, which was something they should have been telling me about, not the other way round. :-x

I think that is an unreasonably long period of time to issue a repayment, and upgrading a computer system is not a reasonable excuse for refusing to issue a payment.

I whould be inclined to complain formally to the council as a precursor to a complaint to the Local Goverment Ombudsman. Copy your councillors in the complaint - I did that when my council tried to make out I had to keep paying for my last home until the new owners got round to registering - the councillors got that stopped in 24 hours.

I must admit it does sound a bit "cock and bull" - were the sum involved "Wintonians Windfall" I may have considered that course of action

No harm firing off an email to a councillor or two anyway, they often like an opportunity to be seen to be helping constituents without offending the party bigwigs.

I'd also be tempted to ask for the interest that you would have gained in your bank account from having the money when you should have had it. Not that it would be much, but it is more the principle of it. Just as you said, if you owed them £100 they would soon be chasing you for it!

I'll be lucky to get the money let alone interest
